Tri-Cities CROP Walk 2006 Walk Information |
The 2006 Tri-Cities CROP Walk was held on Sunday, October 15, 2006. The walk started with a prayer just before the 2pm walk start. Most walkers completed the walk in 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Many walkers brought their dogs. The dogs happily participated in the walk.
A total of 373 walkers from 22 churches and other organizations in the Tri-City area raised $35,105 to fight hunger throughout the world and in the Tri-Cities. The average amount raised per walker was $94.14. The organization with the most walkers was Bethlehem Lutheran Church of St. Charles with 67 walkers raising $4,958. The organization raising the most money was Little Home Church of Wayne raising $5,162.
This year's walk made use of the "Walk on the Web" (WOW), a Church World Service website hosted by Kintera which allows donations to walkers be made on the internet. A total of $2,605 was raised by walkers using this option. Walkers using WOW were able to ask potential donors to support them on their walk by sending emails to friends and family requesting support. Walkers can now easily ask friends and relatives outside the Tri-City area to provide financial support. We hope walkers will make greater use of this option in future Tri-Cities CROP Walks.
Money raised by the Tri-Cities CROP Walk goes to both world and local organizations. 75 percent of the money raised by the walk goes to Church World Service or another recognized organization specified by the donor on the registration form or WOW site. The remaining 25 percent raised stayed here in the Tri-Cities supporting the work of the Northern Illinois Food Bank, Lazarus House, the Salvation Army, and the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.
The start/finish point of the walk was the Batavia United Methodist Church located in downtown Batavia. The walk left the church parking lot on Island Street and proceeded a half block to the Fox River Trail. Once on the trail, the walkers headed east along Houston Street and used the footbridge to cross the Fox River. Once across the river, the walkers headed north along the trail following River Street. Walkers remained on the trail until reaching the footbridge across the Fox River at the Fabyan Forest Preserve. Before crossing the river, walkers were offered water and "run buns." The "run buns" (freshly baked rolls) were provided by Great Harvest Bread Company located in Geneva. At the footbridge, the walkers turned west and crossed the river. Once across, the walkers used the Fox River Trail located on the west side of the river and returned to Batavia UMC. Total length of the walk is 5 kilometers or about 3 miles.
All are welcome to participate in the Tri-Cities CROP Walk. We hope to see an increase in both the number of walkers and in the dollars raised at the 2007 Tri-Cities CROP Walk.
In 2007, the Tri-Cities CROP Walk will celebrate its 20th anniversary! We hope that you will consider walking or donating the the 2007 walk to make this year's walk the most successful yet.
